Miami is celebrating the Big Read for the eighth year. This year’s book, which everyone was invited to read, is The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, which follows a platoon of infantrymen through the jungles of Vietnam. The Center @ Miami Dade College is organizing a number of free Big Read events in March and April.
The next major event is:
- The Big Read Keynote: An Evening with Tim O’Brien. 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, at Coral Gables Congregational Church, 3010 DeSoto Boulevard, Coral Gables. Author Tim O’Brien will key give The Big Read keynote address and talk about The Things They Carried. (Books & Books is co-presenter.)
- Discussions of The Things They Carried also is ongoing at various library branches. Find a discussion here. The Center is giving away a limited number of copies of The Things They Carried at events and via social media.
The Center is collecting donations for the Wounded Warrior project, which helps disabled veterans adjust to life back in the United States.
As part of the focus on veterans, the Center and the South Miami High Cobra Readers are collecting used paperback books to sent to military personnel overseas and to veterans hospitals. You can bring books to The Center office: 401 N.E. Second Avenue, Room 4102, Miami, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Center also is working with MDC students and volunteers to record the life stories of South Florida veterans.
