Saturday, 3:30-5:30 p.m., October 15: “Tama” is an hourglass-shaped hand drum often called the “Talking Drum from Senegal,” played by West African storytellers.
Sunday, 2-4 p.m., October 16: “Parsing the Ocean Veil,” is a performative project that addresses the environmental issues of climate change and the impacts of trash in the ocean.
Both presentations will be held at Green Space Miami, 7200 Biscayne Blvd., Miami, FL 33138.
Performance of Tama
This is a a performance-art piece by artist Yacine Tilala Fall in collaboration with Elijah Rose Williamson. The Wolof tama (drum) is made by the Wolof and Serer people. Its sound mimics human speech and it’s most often played by griots for rituals and oral historians. Inspired by the form and functionality of the drum, this performance consists of a head form worn by two participants that will speak through touch.
Parsing the Ocean Veil
This is a collaborative performance-art piece linking ocean pollution to climate change, created by artists Kim Yantis and Lucinda Linderman of Suiting-Up for the Future Arts Collective, with artist Dito Sudito. The artists present a pair of embodied ocean characters, who navigate the exterior and interior of the gallery while transplanting plastic waste during their performance.
