Free: Games Around the World Community Day, West Palm

Games Around the World Community Day will be held this year on Saturday, July 20, 2024, from noon to 5 p.m., at the Norton Museum of Art, 1450 S. Dixie Highway, in West Palm Beach.

There will be indoor and outdoor games, performers, demonstrations, films, tours and workshops. Some activities have limited capacity and require advance registration.

This family festival features a variety of programs in the Museum’s galleries and Garden, celebrating the Museum’s permanent collection and cultural traditions from around the globe. Main events include spotlight tours, open studio art, and board game activities.

Games will be led by the South Florida Pétanque Club and Palm Beach Chess club, with basics and finer points of the game in the Pearson Room, and a performance by Capoeira Karkara Cultural Arts Center. All ages and ability levels are welcome.

Schedule:

  • Noon – 12:30 p.m.: Express Docent Tour
    Join docents for a quick tour of the Norton's Collection.
  • 12:30 – 3:30 p.m.: Art Workshop
    Create a work of art of your own in drop-in art activities!
  • 12:30 – 1 p.m., 1:30 – 2 p.m., and 2:30 – 3 p.m.: Lotería
    Win prizes with this traditional Mexican board game of chance, similar to Bingo!
  • 1 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.: Spotlight Talks with Norton Summer Interns
    Join summer interns for 15-minute talks about great works by Pop artists Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol.
  • Noon – 2 p.m.: Learn and Play Chess
    Palm Beach Chess coaches will be available to teach chess and introduce more experienced players to the finer points of the game. There is limited space for this event, so please RSVP in advance.
  • 2 – 3:30 p.m.: Chess Master Challenge
    Want to play against a master? State champion and USCF National Master Bryan Tillis will play a simultaneous exhibition match against multiple players all at once. Space is limited and registration is required.
  • Noon – 2:30 p.m.: The South Florida Pétanque Club
    Meet enthusiasts of this French game that is a bit like bowling and bocci, and try the sport yourself. 
  • Noon – 4:30 p.m.: Giant Garden Games
    Kids and adults alike will enjoy playing gigantic versions of Connect Four and checkers in the Georgen Garden. You can also design your own building with giant building blocks.
  • 2:30 – 3:20 p.m.: Highlights Tour with Docents
    Join docents for an in-depth tour of the Norton's Collection, led in both English and Spanish.
  • 3 – 4 p.m. Family Performance: Capoeira Karkara Cultural Arts Center
    Serving Palm Beach County for over 17 years, the Capoeira Karkara Cultural Arts Center is committed to sharing their passion for Capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian martial art that challenges you physically, mentally, and emotionally, while having fun in a playful, family-friendly environment. Families, kids, teens, and adults of all ages and ability levels are welcome to attend.

Parking in the Norton Museum Visitor lot will be free during the day. There are a limited number of spots, so please, carpool or use public transportation if you are able. Free overflow parking will be permitted for the day at Palm Beach Atlantic University in the Intramural Lot, Q lot, and ACA Lot ONLY.
