Order groceries and household products online for pickup or delivery

Some of the links in this post are special! When you make a purchase through our links, we might earn a commission at no additional cost to you. Read full disclosure here.

With most of us spending more time at home, ordering groceries online is more important now than ever however, this could pose a problem for those less experienced with this service.

First you visit the store's website and need to create an account. A majority of the services require downloading an app like Instacart or Shipt to your smartphone where you fill out your grocery list and pay by either credit card or payment app. Tipping your shopper is also an option, one you should do.

To keep up with latest news, sign up for the daily South Florida on the Cheap newsletter. You can also follow us on Facebook.

Once you've placed your order you'll be asked to pick up a time for delivery or curbside pick up. A shopper will then stay in contact via text or through the app to alert you when a certain item isn't available. They will then offer a substitution which you must approve should you want it. If you choose pick up simply park at the Curbside pick up area of your chosen grocery store and an associate will bring it to your car. This is the procedure for local grocery stores as well as national chains like Walmart, Target and Costco.

Usually, same-day curbside pick up or delivery is available but in these times, best to order a few days in advance to ensure you what you need to replenish. If shopping at local grocery stores, consider different locations not necessarily the closest one to home as supplies vary by store.

Publix

Publix uses Instacart for their delivery and curbside pickup, meaning you'll be paying higher than in-store prices, which is noted on the homepage when you log in. The items are organized by Departments where shoppers can easily choose their meat, produce, dairy and eggs, frozen items, beverages, snacks, pantry, deli, bakery, dry goods and pasta, international, breakfast, pets and personal care.

How to order: For pickup or delivery, place  your order on their website, which will automatically switch you to Instacart or through the Instacart app.

Cost: Pickup is free. Delivery fees work one of two ways, either a $3.99 fee for every order placed or pay the $99 per year Instacart membership fee for unlimited grocery delivery on orders of $35 or more.

Minimum purchase: $10 for delivery, no minimum for curbside pickup.

Update: You can also order from Publix, via Shipt. See details below.

Winn-Dixie

Winn-Dixie uses both Instacart and Shipt for online orders and only offers delivery.

Delivery: Annual plan for $8.25 a month, a recurring membership that's $99 billed annually or the $14 monthly plan also a recurring membership.

Amazon Prime Now

Amazon offers two different online shopping and grocery delivery options. The first is Amazon Prime Now, where Prime members can shop for food, including fresh produce and perishables, and other everyday items from Amazon and Whole Foods. The service features same-day delivery in normal times.

Currently, inventory and delivery may be temporarily unavailable or take longer than usual to increased demand. When you order, your availability will be confirmed at checkout. Through April 5, Amazon’s warehouses are currently only accepting essential items, such as household staples, medical supplies, and other high-demand products. This means that if you order something that doesn’t fall into these categories and that is currently out of stock, you will have to wait until after April 5 or later to receive your order. But groceries that are in stock are available quickly.

A Prime membership is required to use Amazon Prime Now. There is a 30-day free trial for the program, but after that it is $12.99/month or $119/year. If you are an EBT or Medicaid user, it’s $5.99/month.

Plus, if you order any five Amazon Pantry items, you’ll get a 5% discount, and if you order any 10 Amazon Pantry items you’ll get a 10% discount.
