Free readings of ‘Purvis: Othello of Overtown,’ Broward & Miami

Here's a classic story with a new twist: This theatrical production, “Purvis: Othello of Overtown,” reimagines the Shakespearean tragedy through the lens of local Florida painter Purvis Young (1943-2010). Two free public readings of selected excerpts are scheduled for October in South Florida.

• BROWARD: Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2024 > 6:15-7:30 p.m. at Broward County Main Library, at 100 S. Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale. 
• MIAMI: Saturday, Oct. 19, 2024 > 2–4 p.m. at Main Library Miami, 101 W. Flagler Street; call 954-816-3324.

Cost: Free

The three-act play explores Young’s artistic journey from Overtown’s poverty-stricken streets to an artist whose works are in some of the world’s best known museums of modern art.

• Greetings: Attendees can gather and meet the hosts Summer Hill Seven and Clare Vickery who collaborated on writing the script.
• Introductions: Meet the actor playing Purvis Young, along with the musical ensemble.

• Discussion: Follows the reading.
