Free entertainment & events at Broward libraries

Library branches in Broward occasionally feature free entertaining events including live performances, yoga, and festivals.

Some events are for kids and families. Others are aimed at adults. At plenty of library branches, parking is free.

For Kids

Marci Poppins entertains with puppets and storytelling 10:30 a.m Tuesday, April 29 at Broward Main library, 100 S. Andrews Avenue, Fort Lauderdale 33301. Information is online.

Travel Expo

The Travel Expo is 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Saturday, May 3 at the Southwest Regional Library, 16835 Sheridan Street,  Pembroke Pines 33331. Register online.

Everglades documentary

The environmental film focuses on women instrumental in protecting the Everglades. The event is 2:30 p.m. May 10 at the Southwest Regional Library, 16835 Sheridan Street,  Pembroke Pines 33331. Register online.

 Book Fest for youngsters & families

The festival is 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. May 31 at West Regional Library, 8601 West Broward Boulevard, Plantation 33324. Register online?. The event includes

  • Interactive art provided  by Young At Art
  • USVI Mocko Jumbie Stilt Dancers 
  • Musical Petting Zoo
  • DIY instruments while supplies last
  • Ms. Tracy Sings
  • Aunty Nadine and Friends present a Jamaican Folklore performance with puppets and props
  •  Lion Dance Team presented by the Coral Springs Chinese Cultural Association

Live Jazz featuring vocalist & violinist Nicole Yarling

Nicole Yarling performs at a jazz event 7 p.m. Thursday, March 13 at African American Research Library, 2650 Sistrunk Blvd., Fort Lauderdale 33311.  The event is part of Africana Fest at the library. Entry is free.

Africana Fest

Africana Fest presented by the at the African American Research Library in Fort Lauderdale is 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. Saturday, March 15 and entry is free. The event includes performances, authors, discussions, presentations, visual arts, and activities. The emphasis is on the Harlem Renaissance. The library is at 2650 Sistrunk Blvd., Fort Lauderdale 33311.

Valentine Performance 

4 p.m. Thursday, February 13  Singer playing acoustic guitar performs love songs at Riverland Branch library, 954-357-7455, 2710 Davie Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale 33312, register online

Karaoke for Valentine's Day

Belt out your favorite love song at Karaoke 2:30 p.m. Friday, February 14 at Broward Main Library, 100 S. Andrews Avenue, Fort Lauderdale. Light refreshments are included. The event is open to kids and adults. Register online.

Valentine Performance

Singer Jennifer McClain entertains with love songs from Hollywood films  2:30 p.m. Friday, February 14 at the Broward Beach Branch library, 954-357-7830, 3250 NE Second St., Pompano Beach 33062.

Valentine Photo Ops

South Regional Library

South Regional Library in Pembroke Pines is offering photo shoots with a selection of backgrounds using a green screen. The photo shoots are 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Wednesday February 5 and Thursday, February 6, and it's a good idea to register online or phone 954-201-8896 for reservations. Register for February 5 online and February 6 online

It's recommended that participants do not wear green or blue items. A staff representative snaps the picture and a digital photo is emailed to participants.

Southwest Regional Library

Southwest Regional Library, 954-357-6580, 16835 Sheridan St., Pembroke Pines  33331, is offering a photo op station for DIY photos in February. The photo station is free to use when the library is open. Use your own camera.  Feel free to bring props. For part of February the station features a Valentine theme, and then it's a France theme.

Miramar

1 p.m. February 8 African Dance and stories at Miramar Branch Library, register online

Davie

10:30 am – 11 a.m. Saturday, February 22 Julius and Julia Sanna of the Afro-fusion band Positively Africa offers songs, dances, and personal stories from the Luo and Zigua African tribes. The event is at the Nova Southeastern University Library, 3300 S. University Drive, Davie. Fees for parking at the university apply.

West Park

6 p.m. February 12 Positively Africa performs at the branch library, 4735 SW 18th Street, West Park

Pinwheel Festival in Davie

Pinwheel Festival and Resource Fair is 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.  April 12 at the Davie branch library, 4600 SW 82nd Avenue, Davie 33328.

The emphasis is on safety for youngsters.

The event includes activities, representatives of  youth safety organizations, face painting, rock painting, fire truck demonstration and entertainment for kids. Register online.

Festival of Words

Festival of Words emphasizes the joy of reading and diversity with performances and authors and activities for kids 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. April 26 at African American Library, 2650 Sistrunk Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale 33311. Entry is free. Register online.
