Black History Month celebrations around Miami

February is Black History Month and there are free and cheap festivities honoring the achievements of African-Americans throughout South Florida. Please keep checking this post, as it will be updated frequently.

The Gaze Africana: An Exhibit of Black Excellence Black History Month exhibition presented by Afrikin Art featuring the works of international black artists and creatives whose work represents black excellence. On display through Feb. 28 at the Scott Galvin Community Center, 1600 NE 126 St., North Miami. Click here for more info. Free.

Heritage Fest 2023: Black Resistance is an afternoon celebrating the African diaspora and their resistance to oppression. Host DJ Nickymix presides over the festivities including a dance workshop, community mural painting, children’s book readings, musical performances and a vendor marketplace. Feb. 4 from 3-7 p.m. at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, 1300 Biscayne Blvd. Free but RSVP required.

Fantasy Theatre Factory Sensory-Inclusive Performance of “Heroes In My House: A Magical Journey Through Black History Month” about a black student whose school assignment on Black History and conversation in his grandmother’s kitchen result in a magical event. Feb. 4 at noon, Sandrell Rivers Theater, 6103 NW 7 Ave., Miami. Tickets $5 but if that price is an obstacle, free passes can be requested.

Black Excellence Festival family-friendly festival celebrating Black History Month with live performances, games, food trucks and Black-owned businesses selling their wares at the vendor area. Feb. 23 from 4-8 p.m., Somerset Preparatory Academy, 3000 SE 9 St., Homestead. $5 per person. Click here for info and to RSVP. 

Diversity of the African Diaspora: Music as a Form of Resistance, Joy and Love! event with music by local DJ Tillery, a poetry reading by author and activist Mo Beasley and musical performances by soul singer La Vie and band and trumpet player Melton Mustafa Jr. Feb. 19 from 2-6 p.m., Brickell City Centre Garden Deck, 701 S. Miami Oratorio Society concert “Spirit I” directed by Andrew Anderson and featuring the Tim Watson Jazz Band. The performance celebrates music, culture and black history. Feb. 25 at 4 p.m., North Dade Regional Library, 2455 NW 183 St., Miami Gardens. Free. Click here for info.

Events at MOCA Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami, 770 NE 125 Street, Miami

Feb. 5 at 10:30 a.m. Sunday Stories, a reading of “Harlem’s Little Blackbird: The Story of Florence Mills” by Renee Watson. Participants will learn about the “Queen of Happiness” and make their own Happy Sun with a Polaroid selfie. Free.

Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. Conversations at MOCA: The Aesthetic Languages of Haiti in Diaspora moderated by Dickinson College African American and Afro Caribbean visual arts and culture Professor Jerry Philogene with artists Michelle Lisa Polissaint, Mark Fleuridor and Morel Dourcet. Free.

Feb. 24 at 8 p.m. Jazz at MOCA featuring Troy Anderson and The Wonderful World Band paying tribute to Louis Armstrong with their own blend of jazz. Free.
