Back To School Back to Wellness with Florida Blue

It’s time to start thinking about sending the kids back to school. Some free school supplies are offered at lots of events in Miami-Dade County for students returning to school for the 2024 fall session.

Events sometimes include free physicals, food vouchers, or even free haircuts. Back To School events occasionally include fun activities and entertainment, plus many provide free backpacks stuffed with school supplies for pre-registered students.

Eligibility requirements vary at different events and often the events require students to show proof of residency in that town to qualify for free items.

Some of the events listed below may allow limited walk-in traffic or are open to the public without pre-registration. We are providing this information to you as a community service, so that hopefully you can find something that will help make sending the kids back to school a little easier. The information is subject to change without notice, so please check the resources and verify details before heading out.

Remember: Back to School Sales Tax Holiday is from July 29 to Aug. 11, 2024. No sales tax is collected on purchases of uniforms, clothing, footwear, and certain accessories selling for $100 or less per item. Certain school supplies selling for the price of $50 or less. Check this website for details.

South Miami

Back to School Celebration with Miami Kids Magazine is 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, 2024 at Sunset Place, 5701 Sunset Dr., South Miami. The free annual Back to School Celebration at Shops at Sunset Place will be offering various amazing giveaways for the whole family. Hialeah Cares: Back to School Food and Backpack Distribution Drive-Thru 10 a.m. to 1 p.m on Saturday, Aug. 3 at Miami Dade College Hialeah Campus, 1780 W 49 St., Hialeah. Back to School Bash & National Night Out 5-8 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 5 at Milander Park, 4800 Palm Ave., Hialeah. Backpack and school supply giveaway plus fun activities with police officers including Dunk-A-Cop, a K-9 demonstration and Kid Print services. Plus, live DJ's providing musical entertainment. Miami

Summer Send-Off and Free Family Day is 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 10 at Historic Hampton House, 4240 NW 27 Ave., Miami. BBA Miami Back to School Event and Basketball Tournament is 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 10 at Miami-Dade County Youth Fair and Exposition, 10901 SW 24 St., Miami. Basketball tournament is open to individuals 21 and over plus, there will be backpack and school supply giveaways for students in need, as well as haircuts and sneakers. Burnie the Heat mascot will be available for selfies and so will the display of Miami Heat Championship trophies.

South Dade 

Back to School Giveaway is 10 a.m. to 1 noon Saturday, July 27, at Florida Technical College, 20505 South Dixie Hwy, 33189. The event includes multiple activities, live music broadcast by Hot 105 FM, and more! Backpacks filled with school supplies will be given away. Full details here.

Backpack & School Supplies Giveaway/Food Distribution is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3 at The Way Miami, 14105 SW 184 St., Miami (entrance on 142 Ave.) The community event will include backpack and school supply giveaways, games and activities, a bounce house and grocery boxes and hot meal giveaways too.
