Back to School events

Plenty of back to school events offer distributions of free backpacks and school supplies for eligible students. 

 

Jamaica Emancipendence Fair in Miramar 

Live entertainment with a Jamaican flair is featured at Jamaica Emancipendence Fair. The event includes a kids zone and farmer vendors. 

It's 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, August 2, and entry is free. Parking is $10. Online the parking fee is $12.76 with fee. 

The venue is Miramar Regional Park, 16801 Miramar Parkway, 33025.

Eats N Beats in Parkland

6 p.m. – 9 p.m.  August 2 Eats N Beats in Parkland features Shane Duncan Band. The event is at Pine Trails Park Amphitheater, 10561 Trails End, Parkland 33076. Entry and parking are free. 

Groove N Grub in north Broward

6 p.m. – 9 p.m. August 2 Groove N Grub features a band and food trucks. The venue is the community center at 1100 Lyons Road, Coconut Creek. 

National Night Out Events

Several towns in Broward offer National Night Out events August 5 that focus on safety and friendly relationships with local police. Some include entertainment and games.  

Dive-in film ‘Mufasa' in Pompano

Dive-in movies at 8 p.m. at the aquatics facilities, 901 NW 10th St., Pompano Beach 33060 include:

  • August 8 “Mufasa” 

Entry is free.

Jamaica Independence Fete in Miramar 

LP International featuring Puma, Supa Twitch, and Glamour Wayne and Tony Matterhorn are featured 7 p.m. – 11 p.m. August 8 at the Jamaica Independence Fete and entry is free.

PrideFete in Wilton Manors

PrideFete is 6 – 11 p.m. August 9 at Richardson Park, 1937 Wilton Drive 33305.

Regular entry for the LGBTQ Caribbean festival  is $8 with fee  before the event and $11 with fee at the event. VIP tickets are available.

Entry is free for volunteers and participants in a costume contest.

Hollywood ArtWalk

Hollywood ArtWalk in downtown district is 6 p.m. – 10 p.m. August 16 and other third Saturdays with tours, live entertainment and vendors. Entry is free. Parking fees apply. 

Oakland Park Art Walk 

 The Art Walk is 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. August 16 at Art Fusion Galleries, 3496 NE 12th Avenue, Oakland Park 33334. Parking is free. 

India Independence Day Festival in Fort Lauderdale 

Performances, food and vendors representing different regions of India are featured at the India Independence Day Festival in Fort Lauderdale. The event is 11:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. Sunday, August 17, and entry is free.

The festival is at Broward Center, 201 SW Fifth Avenue, Fort Lauderdale 33312. It‘s  presented by The Association of Indians in America Florida chapter. 

Parking fees are  
  • $3 or $4 an hour
  • $15 for garage 
  • $30 for valet parking

Taste of Trinidad and Tobago in Lauderhill 

The free Taste of Trinidad and Tobago is 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. Friday, August 29, and entry is free. The event includes entertainment and foods representing the region. It's at Inverrary community center, 3300 Inverrary Blvd., Lauderhill 33319, and parking is free.

Trinidad and Tobago Independence Event 

Trinidad & Tobago Independence festivities are 6 p.m. – 10 p.m. August 30 and entry is free. Parking is $22.96 online. VIP parking is $34.30.

Labor Day Weekend Festival in Fort Lauderdale

Vintage vehicles, rock and roll band and vendors are featured at the Labor Day weekend festival 4 p.m. – 9 p.m. Sunday, August 31, at North Beach Restaurants and Shoppes, on Northeast 32nd Street Street from 33rd Avenue  to A1A.

Always Free 

  • The Plantation Historical Museum includes exhibits, occasional trivia games and other events, and often model train displays. The venue usually is open 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on  Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, with some exceptions. Plantation Historical Museum, 954-797-2722, is at 511 N. Fig Tree Lane, Plantation 33317. Parking is free.
  • Downtown Hollywood Murals exhibit features about 45 vibrant murals on buildings and sidewalks in easy walkable route, and it's free. Information about the artwork and artists is online.

Fort Lauderdale 

Fort Lauderdale Home Design and Remodeling Show is August 29-September 1 with discount opportunities offered while the promotion is offered. The indoor show is at the Greater Fort Lauderdale Broward Convention Center, 1950 Eisenhower Blvd., Fort Lauderdale 33316. Parking fees

are $20.

Broward 

Participating restaurants in Broward are offering fixed price menus in August and September for Dine Out Lauderdale promotions. Prices are often $35 for lunch and  $45, $60 and $75 for dinner. Often it's a three-course meal with appetizer, entrée and dessert.
