Rene Rodriguez, former film critic for The Miami Herald, now runs the Cosford Cinema on the University of Miami Campus and he’s always coming up with some type of innovative film series.
The latest is a series of free screenings of films based on banned books, In Celebration of Banned Books. Entry is free, but RSVP is required.
Here is the schedule:
Deep Cuts From the Sight & Sound List Screening, $5
Another series is called “Deep Cuts From the Sight & Sound List Screening,” a curated film series featuring what are considered the best films of all time.
Conducted every 10 years, the Sight & Sound Best Movies of All Time poll is voted on by film critics, writers, professors and other experts in the field of cinema. A concurrent poll is open only to directors, and their results often vary wildly from the main poll. The Cosford Cinema will be showcasing 11 selections from the second half of the list every Sunday at 1 p.m. from Sept. 10 through Dec. 3, 2023. Admission is $5 per film.
Here’s the lineup:
- Sept. 10: “Blade Runner” (1982) starring Harrison Ford, Daryl Hannah, Rutger Hauer, Edward James Olmos and Sean Young, directed by Ridley Scott.
- Sept. 17: “La Cienaga” (2001) written and directed by Lucrecia Martel about a bourgeois family whiling away the hours during a sweaty and sticky summer.
- Sept 24: “Army of Shadows” (1969) directed by underworld poet Jean-Pierre Melville and his struggles and sacrifices of fighting in the French resistance.
- Oct. 1: “Vagabond” (1985) written and directed by Agnes Varda about a young drifter named Mona discovered frozen to death in a ditch and the flashbacks that reveal how she got there. French with English subtitles.
- Oct. 8: “Melancholia” (2011) directed by Lars Von Trier and starring Kirsten Dunst and Kiefer Sutherland about the impending doom of a blue planet named Melancholia hurtling to Earth during a wedding.
- Oct. 15: “Happy Together” (1997) written and directed by Wong Kar Wai about the turbulent relationship between two gay men traveling through Argentina.
- Oct. 22: “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” (1964) written and directed by Jacques Demy starring Catherine Deneuve about the love between and umbrella shop owner’s daughter and mechanic that’s sent off to war. French with English subtitles.
- Oct. 29: “Magnolia” (1999) directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and starring Tom Cruise, William H. Macy, Julianne Moore, John C. Reilly, Jason Robards and Phillip Seymour Hoffman in a story about the interrelated lives of people in the San Fernando Valley over the course of 24 hours.
- Nov. 5: “Daughters of the Dust” (1991) directed by Julie Dash tells the story of three generations of Gullah women set in 1901 on the South Carolina island of St. Helena.
- Nov. 19: “His Girl Friday” (1939) black & white film directed by Howard Hawks starring Cary Grant, Rosalind Russell and Ralph Bellamy in a romantic screwball comedy about a New York newspaper editor and the trouble that ensues when he discovers his ex-wife is dating an investigative reporter.
- Dec. 3: “Mad Max Fury Road” (2015) directed by George Miller and starring Charlize Theron, Tom Hardy and Zoe Kravitz is the fourth entry in the Mad Max franchise about a woman rebelling against a tyrannical ruler while searching for her homeland.
Watching Movies With …
Another film series “Watching Movies With…” kicks off in August and runs through November. Screenings are once a month on a random Saturday at 5 p.m. and feature Miami locals, including Mayor Danielle Levine Cava, Singer Gloria Estefan, Filmmaker Kareem Tabsch founder of O Cinema and Miami Herald Food Writer and Former Book Editor Connie Ogle introducing that month’s film.
Tickets are $10, still a bargain for a movie these days.
Here’s the lineup:
- August 26: Mayor Daniella Levine Cava will present “My Cousin Vinny” (1992) starring Oscar winner for her role Marissa Tomei along with Joe Pesci and Ralph Macchio.
- Sept. 16: Gloria Estefan will present “Young Frankenstein” (1974) the Mel Brooks comedy starring Gene Wilder, Marty Feldman, Mel Brooks, Madeline Kahn, Teri Garr and Peter Boyle as the monster.
- Oct. 7: Kareem Tabsch will present “The Birdcage” (1996) starring Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, Hank Azaria, Gene Hackman and Dianne Wiest.
- Nov. 4: Connie Ogle will present “Aliens” (1986) the follow-up to the 1979 smash hit horror film stars Sigourney Weaver in her iconic role along with Bill Paxon and Michael Biehn.
