Monthly Coral Gables bike tour is fun and educational

If you're looking for something fun and educational to do outdoors, consider a bicycle tour through “The City Beautiful,” Coral Gables. The third Sunday of each month, The City of Coral Gables and the Coral Gables Museum will host a two-hour bike tour, with different monthly themes. The tour begins at 10 a.m. at the Coral Gables Museum, 285 Aragon Ave. although there are a few that meet at a different spot.

Each tour offers a different theme and route! Tours start at the Coral Gables Museum and include museum admission. Bike tours are presented by Bike Walk Coral Gables in partnership with the Coral Gables Museum. You will need to bring your own bike. Helmets are required for children under 16.

Each tour lasts approximately 2 hours and costs $10 per adult; or $5 for Museum members and children under 12. Click HERE to get tickets.

Feb 16: Bahamian History Tour

Coral Gables Mayor Vince Lago leads a tour of the historic Bahamian settlers in the area who helped created the city a century ago. Held during Black History month, the tour explores the history of the Bahamian immigrants in the MacFarlane Homestead Historic District, the beginnings of the neighborhood and the stories of the original buildings.

March 16: Bike & BBQ – A Cycle Day Event

Take a ride to Matheson Hammock Park and picnic at the historic pavilion. Meet at the Coral Gables Youth Center (405 University Dr, Coral Gables). Presented in partnership with the City of Coral Gables and Dade Heritage Trust.

April 27: University of Miami Centennial Tour (1925)

Tour of the University of Miami’s Coral Gables Campus architecture, history, and natural beauty. In celebration of the centennial anniversary of the UM charter, ride around to see the best of the old and new.

May 18: Downtown Walking Tour

No bikes this month, instead join former Mayor Don Slesnick on a leisurely walk to celebrate the 100-year history of the downtown hub of Coral Gables where some of the iconic historical buildings still exist.

June 15: George Merrick’s Birthday Tour

Celebrate the city’s founder George Merrick, touring the city’s birthplace and namesake as part of the city’s centennial celebration. The ride will highlight the Merrick family history in Coral Gables.

July 20: George Merrick’s Fountains, Waterways and Parks – A Cycle Day Event

Bike ride led by Commissioner Rhonda Anderson around some of the city's most iconic waterways and iconic water features including historic Venetian Pool and the DeSoto Fountain. Presented in partnership with the City of Coral Gables. This tour leaves from the Coral Gables Youth Center at 405 University Dr.

Aug. 17: Canopy tour – George Merrick’s Vision

Ride down some of Gables’ shadiest streets, many of which are lined by trees planted by George Merrick 100 years ago. Learn from a local expert guide about the lush treescape that makes Coral Gables the “City Beautiful”.

Sept. 21: George Merrick’s Entrances

Former City Commissioner Ralph Cabrera, leads this bike tour of the the grand entrances that were part of George Merrick’s masterplan 100 years ago to impress City visitors. The tour will be filled fun facts about local history and architecture, including the political connections Merrick had to the construction of the Tamiami Trail.

Oct. 19: Historic Buildings of Phineas Paist

Phineas Paist (1873-1937) was the supervising architect for the Coral Gables Corporation during the founding of the City 100 years ago. His buildings include City Hall, Venetian Pool, the Colonnade Building, and the San Sebastian Apartment Hotel.

Nov. 16: Historic Homes

Many of the City’s most beautiful and historic homes date back to Coral Gables’ founding 100-years ago, bike along the City’s tree-lined residential streets to visit the many historic gems.

Dec. 21: George Merrick’s Villages

Explore the architectural styles from around the world represented in Coral Gables and hear how of the 14 international-planned villages planned for Coral Gables, only seven were built.

Parking (if you are arriving by vehicle with bikes attached)

There is a city garage conveniently located across from the Museum at 220 Aragon Ave., as well as an additional metered parking lot on the opposite side of the museum entrance, at 338 Giralda Ave. Metered street parking is also available along Aragon Avenue and Giralda Avenue.
