Tips to Find the Best Deals at Garage Sales and Yard Sales

Arrive Early (and Come Late)

The early birds are always at the sale before it even opens. They know that it's important to be the first ones there to get the best deals. However, if you show up at the end of the day, the seller is likely to be willing to negotiate.

Look for Quality and Brand Names

Check for brand names and labels on items, especially if you’re planning to resell items. Brand name items can almost always be resold for a higher price. Look for popular brands in clothing, electronics, and household items. Check carefully for well-made items, sturdy construction, and high-quality materials. These items are likely to last longer and provide better value for your money.

Dig Through the Piles and Boxes

Don’t be afraid to dig through boxes and piles of items. Hidden treasures can often be found buried beneath the surface. Take your time and be thorough in your search. You might want to wear gloves to protect your hands.

Keep an Eye Out for Unusual Items

Keep an eye out for unusual items that may be worth more than their asking price. But think beyond “value” when you find unique items. You may have just stumbled upon something that you’ll enjoy for years.

Ask Questions and Negotiate (But Be Polite)

Sellers are often willing to negotiate, but some will be offended if you get too pushy. You should ask questions about items, and it's fine to offer a lower price, especially if you buy multiple items. But, be polite and respectful. Remember that different cultures have different ways of negotiating.

Know Values

Know what the types of items you're interested in usually sell for. This will help you identify good deals. You can also use your phone while you're there to check prices on eBay and other sites.

Look for Multi-Family and Community Sales

Multi-family sales, church sales and community sales will have a wider variety of items for sale. It’s more efficient for you to shop at one big multi-family or community sale than to drive to several smaller sales.
