The Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami is the place to check out groundbreaking and thought-provoking exhibitions and catch live jazz acts on the last Friday of the month during the free Jazz at MOCA. However, it's also where to go for other free and cheap events.
There's something for everyone all month long including classes for kids and adults and other exhibition-themed special events.
Saturday, May 2 – miniMakers
Workshop for kids ages 6-12 inspired by Joan “ENTES” Jiménez
2-4 p.m., free
Inspired by artist Joan “ENTES” Jiménez and his large metal cut-out sculptures, families will create their own figure-based artworks using sturdy paper, cardboard, and collage materials, participants will design cut-out figures shown dancing, talking, gathering, or sharing meals. RSVP here.
Sunday, May 3 – Sunday Stories
“Freedom Soup” from 10:30-11:30 a.m., free
Inspired by the picture book “Freedom Soup” by Tami Charles, families will explore themes of heritage, freedom, and family traditions in celebration of Haitian Heritage Month. Kids create their own “Freedom Soup” artwork by illustrating and collaging ingredients that represent comfort, joy, and togetherness in their lives. RSVP here.
Saturday, May 9
MOCA Makers: Legacy Series – Community as Archive
1-3 p.m., $10 per person
In this workshop participants will have access to The Carol City Museum and the city of North Miami archives, photos, sculpture, and media archives to create a community photo album in celebration of MOCANomi’s 30 years of dedication to the arts. RSVP here.
Block Party on the Plaza: Celebrating Joan “Entes” Jiménez
3-6 p.m., free
The block party honors Jiménez’s Art on the Plaza work, “Bailando Nuestros Problemas,” cut iron sculptures that pay tribute to Shango and evoke the joy, resilience, and shared cultural life of Black and Brown communities across Latin America. The Plaza block party will feature internationally recognized artist, educator, and cultural manager Andres Arevalo who presents “A Living Jarana Experience” with Afro-Peruvian music, live guitar, cajón, and traditional dances like Marinera and Festejo.
