Free & inexpensive fitness programs in Sunrise

The City of Sunrise offers various opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy free or inexpensive athletic and fitness activities.

On the last Friday of each month from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., people can enjoy Soca Step Dance Aerobics. The fun takes place at City Park 6600 Sunset Strip. Participants are encouraged to bring water, a towel and a flag as everyone exercises to the rhythms of a live Soca DJ. The exercise session is hosted by Coach Kamal from Tailored Fitness.  The program is free but pre-registration/signed waiver required. Sign up online .

The 40+ Double Dutch Jump Rope activity is offered on Thursdays from 7 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. at the Village Multipurpose Center at 2240 NW 68th Avenue. Women age 40+ can take a break from the real world by jumping rope, hula hooping, playing hopscotch and other fun activities. The activity is free but a signed waiver is required.

The Sunrise Parks and Recreation program offers a wide variety of fitness and exercise programs. Some charge a small amount of money, but most are free and welcome people of all abilities. Programs include Total Body Fitness, Zumba Gold, Floor Chair Yoga, Latin Dance and Flex and Stress.

There are also fields and basketball courts where people can get together and play a variety of sports. For example, a group of people can meet up at a basketball court, shoot baskets and as more people arrive will choose up sides for a game. Some games are fun and casual while others are as intense as an NBA final. At some courts, there may be a regular group of men and women who come together and play but people can come and go at any time. On the city’s fields, people of all ages come together and play soccer, football and softball. On some fields, groups of friends have regular sessions where they get together and play their favorite games.
