From the Green Book to the Groove Black History Month event

Opa-locka's Ten North Group, in honor of Black History Month, is presenting  “From the Green Book to the Groove,” a free public jazz and cultural experience taking place across the Ten North Group campus in Opa-locka’s Arts District on Friday, Feb. 20 from 7-11 p.m. RSVP on Eventbrite is strongly encouraged.

The Black History Month celebration will feature a live jazz performance, visual art, and immersive historical installations inspired by The Negro Motorist Green Book. The campus-wide cultural activation aims to show how music, art, and place sustained Black life, enterprise, and cultural expression in the mid-20th century.

Here is what to expect:

  • Saxophonist, composer, and educator Simon Mogul  joined by an ensemble of collaborating musicians for two live sets
  • “Memory in Motion,” an  exhibition by internationally acclaimed artist Philippe Dodard
  • “Required Reading,” an archival and visual installation centered on “The Negro Motorist Green Book”
  • “Garden of Humanity,” a curated cultural corridor featuring outdoor jazz performances and reflective installations.
  • Walks through historic space activations including the ARC, the Hurt Building, and the Historic Opa-locka Train Station—home to the Opa-locka Museum of Art & History
  • Presentation “More Than a Guidebook: The Green Book as an Ecosystem of Black Enterprise” by Michael Valentine, Music Director and weekday afternoon drive host of 88 Jazz Place on WDNA 88.9 FM.
  • Food available for purchase from DBF Kitchen, a locally owned Opa-locka food truck and caterer

The program is part of Ten North Group’s ongoing work toward the Florida Museum of Black History.

The Ten North Group campus is located steps from the Opa-locka Tri-Rail Station at 675 Ali Baba Avenue, Opa-locka.
