Free tour of historic Doc Thomas House

The Tropical Audubon Society is hosting free tours of the historic Doc Thomas House every First Saturday of the month starting on at 1 and 3 p.m.  The house is located at 5530 Sunset Dr. in South Miami. The final tour of the season is on Saturday, May 4, 2024. Tours will resume in October 2024.

The 1932 cottage which sits on 2.2 acres of wooded property, has recently undergone extensive structural restoration and repair, a major reason the Tropical Audubon Society wants to showcase the home.

Enjoy a one-hour guided tour led by a Tropical Audubon docent.  The tour is also a great opportunity to learn about Tropical Audubon Society's patron and area pioneer Arden Hayes “Doc” Thomas and Robert Fitch Smith, the architect who designed the Florida vernacular cottage, distinguished by its native woods and oolitic limestone features. The home is a designated county, state and national historic site.

After the tour, attendees are encouraged to explore the bird-pollinating gardens and near-native Steinberg Nature Center grounds.

Although the tours are free RSVP is required.
