Documentary screening: Crossing Overtown, free in Delray Beach

The Spady Cultural Heritage Museum and the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County’s Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) have partnered to present this documentary for the public to view for free. It first aired on American Public Television and local PBS stations.

The documentary examines the integral role that Miami played in the national Civil Rghts Movement. It explores the history of race relations in Overtown, the oldest Black community in greater Miami, and presents a platform for further dialogue on a national level.

The film tracks the legacy of Jim Crow America in South Florida and how black residents’ response to racism and discrimination would eventually lead to the nation’s only Black Precinct and Colored Courtroom in the Historic Village of Overtown.

A panel composed of the director, historians and social justice activists featured in the film will follow the screening.
