Free ‘dive-in’ movie for adults and teens

Here's a way to beat the heat: See a free movie while you're in the water.

Readers of South Florida on the Cheap are invited to grab their swimsuits and favorite inner tubes and head to Oleta River State Park for a special advance screening of the action movie “Meg 2: The Trench” on the water. The event will be Saturday, July 29, 2023, and you must get free tickets in advance.

The film will be shown on Ballyhoo Media’s iconic 60-foot floating screens, off the sandy beach area at Oleta River State Park. Because of the content of the movie, attendees must be 13 or older.

This isn't just a movie screening but a party. The event will feature complimentary food trucks, beverages, swag giveaways, a live DJ,
games and photo opportunities. Guests will also receive a free MEG inner tube while supplies last to watch the film from the water.

Here is the movie synopsis:

Jonas Taylor leads a research team on an exploratory dive into the deepest depths of the ocean. Their voyage spirals into chaos when a malevolent mining operation threatens their mission and forces them into a high-stakes battle for survival. Pitted against colossal, prehistoric sharks and relentless environmental plunderers, they must outrun, outsmart and outswim their merciless predators.

Here is the schedule:

  • 6:30 p.m. Check-in opens.
  • 7 p.m. Party starts, featuring free food, drinks, games, music and giveaways.
  • 8:30 p.m. Dive-in moving screening begins on the water

Guests can bring beach chairs, water bottles, their own tubes and, of course, swimsuits, towels and sunscreen. Coolers, outside alcohol, glass, balloons and firearms are not allowed.

Each guest over 21 will get two free drink tickets, good for beer, wine or soda. Free water will be provided for all guests. Entry to the park will also be free.

The dive-in movie event is at Sandy Beach at Oleta River State Park, 3400 NE 163rd Street, North Miami Beach, FL 33160. We are moderately certain there are no prehistoric sharks, or megalodons, in the water there.

Here's a preview of the movie, which is rated PG-13 and opens in theaters Aug. 3, 2023:
