For 28 years from 1923 to 1951, a man named Ed Leedskalnin secretly carved rock at night. He ended up with 1,100 tons of coral in unusual shapes and today his creation is called Coral Castle, now a Miami attraction.
Features of the Coral Castle Museum and sculpture garden include a 5,000-pound heart-shaped table that’s listed in the Guinness Book of World Records; a nine-ton gate, a Polaris telescope, and functioning rocking chairs, all made entirely of coral rock. There are also guided tours and an onsite cafe.
Admission is $18 to those 13 and older and $8 for children age 7 to 12. The attraction is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday through Sunday.
Coral Castle Museum is located at 28655 South Dixie Highway in Miami, near Homestead (Exit #5 off the Florida Turnpike and then go West one mile). For more information, call: 305-248-6345.
