Goombay and Junkanoo are familiar words in Bahamian culture. They both invoke visions of colorful costumes, calypso music and dancing, followed by a sumptuous feast.
And you're in luck because the annual arts and cultural event, the Miami Goombay Festival, will celebrate Coconut Grove’s Bahamian roots by taking the party to the streets, and you're invited.
When: Friday, May 31, through Sunday, June 2, 2024.
- Friday: 6-9 p.m.
- Saturday: 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Sunday: Noon to 8 p.m.
This year, in collaboration with the Bahamian Consulate of Miami, organizers will not only bring vendors and performers from the Bahamas, but will also feature local artists Trina and Larry Dogg who will perform on stage.
Junkanoo rushes, where costumed participants flood the streets with rhythm and dance, will continue throughout the weekend, along with food trucks and live music. Admission is free; vendor prices vary.
Location: The intersection of Grand Avenue and Douglas Road, continuing into Armbrister Park, at 4000 Grand Ave,
Be prepared for the sounds of whistles, drums, and trumpets as Junkanoo performers parade down Grand Avenue, and the aroma of Bahamian delicacies, such as conch fritters, cracked conch and conch salad, fill the air.
Free trolley service will run throughout the weekend between the Douglas Road Metrorail Station and Elizabeth Virrick Park.
