Naturalist-guided Dry Swamp Walking Tours, Big Cypress

What better way to spend Earth Day than take a trek through the Big Cypress Reserve with a seasoned nature guide. Clyde Butcher's Big Cypress Gallery is hosting a walk on the wild side between 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, 2024, for $10. Each tour lasts about 45 minutes. 

Here are some of the highlights you can expect:

  • Experience the green botanical paradise of Clyde and Niki’s backyard
  • See the effects of El Niño on the current water levels of our wetlands
  • Get acquainted with nature’s mosquito control system—the bladderworts of the swamp

  • View the interior of a cypress swamp without getting your feet wet
  • Hear the calls of native raptors, warblers, or woodpeckers
  • Feel why sawgrass earned its name
  • Walk through a cypress, pop ash, pond apple tree forest
  • Learn how early indigenous people and settlers used nature to survive and thrive
  • Understand why Clyde and Niki seek to protect pristine wild places
  • Observe the variety of rare bromeliads sheltered in a cypress swamp
  • Be inspired by the diversity of nature
  • Feel the velvety texture of ferns
  • Touch the earth in a new way
  • Tour the Swamp Cottage and Bungalow rentals

Clyde Butcher has been a legendary nature photographer for decades, especially known for his large-format black-and-white stills that capture the breadth and life of the Florida Everglades.

While Clyde may not be in attendance, the gallery staff will be on hand to assist guests and teach them about about Clyde’s remarkable art and why it's important to appreciate and protect nature.
