GableStage at the Biltmore in association with The Yiddishkayt Initiative, The George Feldenkreis Program in Judaic Studies, The Miller Center for Contemporary Judaic Studies presents a free play reading of “God of Vengeance” by Sholem Asch Feb. 18 at 7:30 p.m.
The play is preceded by a lecture at 6 p.m. by David Mazower, bibliographer and editorial director at the National Yiddish Book Center. He will be discussing his great-grandfather, world renowned playwright Sholem Asch.
The play tells the story of a Jewish brothel owner Yanki who lives with his wife, a former whore who used to work for him, and their daughter Rivkele who has a reputation as a pure girl. The plot to turn Rivkele into a prostitute is helped along by her crush on one of the prostitutes in the basement who lures into the life via the pimp Shloyme.
