Musician Shelly Berg will kick off the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. weekend celebration Friday night with a free one-hour musical journey, “Jazz: The Sound of Freedom,” a trip through the evolution of jazz and its influences on some of the celebrated songs and artists inspired by the Civil Rights movement.
Berg, a jazz pianist, is a Grammy-nominated arranger, orchestrator and producer. He is dean and a professor of Music at the University of Miami.
Doors open and seating begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, for the 7 p.m. free concert at the Coral Gables Congregational United Church of Christ.
Canned food and monetary donations will be accepted for Feeding South Florida.
Other MLK weekend events at the Coral Gables Congregational UCC:
- Hunger Vigil. 9 a.m. until goal is reached. Bring cans of food to help raise 10,000 pounds for Feeding South Florida. You can also donate online ($1 = 1 pound of food).
- Festival of the Flea. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Browse the treasures of more than 20 vendors in this community-wide flea market. The festival also will include music and food for sale.
Sunday, Jan. 14
- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Remembrance Service. 11 a.m. to noon. Speaker will be the Rev. Bob Chase, and the Legato Vocal Ensemble will provide music.
