The Backyard Movement, a collective of South Florida organizers, educators and musicians, is presenting ZakaFest, a celebration of Haitian culture, on Saturday, May 4.
The festival includes drumming and dance workshops, food, panel discussions and performances by more than a dozen musical groups.
Zaka is the patron saint or lwa (spirit) of agriculture in the Diaspora. The event is part of the celebration of Haitian Heritage Month.
Evening performers include Haitian pianist and composer Mushy Widmaier; Mizik rasin (roots music) innovator Louis Lesly Marcelin; Morikeba Kouyate; Sanba Zao; Ibrahima Dioubate; Cuban son duo Cortadito; funk act Rara Kuyu; Brother Ciceron and Rara Lakay , who will conclude the night with a procession through the Little Haiti neighborhood.
The event is 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Little Haiti Cultural Center, 212 NE 59 Terrace, Miami 33137.
