Here are a few suggestions for free and cheap spring break activities for kids, youth and families in Miami-Dade this week:
* Free poetry workshop for kids 7-10 at 2 p.m. Monday, April 6, at Books and Books, 265 Aragon, Ave., Coral Gabbles. Denise Lanier – poet, writing professor at Broward College and founder of Word Play, a poetry-in-the-schools project – will lead a workshop showing children the many forms of poetry. She’ll also focus on fun, with a silly poem about a favorite animal and a rhyming poem about a favorite place.
* Tour one of Miami-Dade County’s oldest homes, The Barnacle, which belonged to Miami pioneer Ralph Munroe. The Barnacle State Historic Park is at 3485 Main Highway, Coconut Grove. Tours are at 10 a.m, 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m Mondays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Admission is $1.
* Celebrate the first birthday of Moms Miami at Miami MetroZoo, 12400 SW 152nd St., Miami. Party is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 7. The first 100 moms to arrive get free admission for two with this coupon. (There is a coupon for $3 off zoo admission, good for up to six people, in Sunday’s Miami Herald Neighbors coupon.
