movies.jpgThe Miami Tower Film Series hosted by the Miami Jazz Society screens two free films nearly every Tuesday, at the Miami Tower downtown. The films are preceded by snacks and beverages from 5 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.

Here’s the upcoming schedule:

  • Tuesday, May 21: Anne of Green Gables (1985) at 6:15 p.m. Anne Shirley, an orphan, is adopted by farmer Matthew Cuthbert and his sister Marilla, who were expecting a boy to help with their farm work. However, they accept Anne, who quickly endears herself to them and to the local villagers. Akeelah and the Bee (2006) at 9:30 p.m. A young girl from South Los Angeles tries to make it to the National Spelling Bee. (Starring Laurence Fishburne & Angela Bassett)
  • Tuesday, May 28: La Femme Nikita (1990) at 6:15 p.m. French action thriller. Convicted felon Nikita, instead of going to jail, is given a new identity and trained, stylishly, as a top secret spy/assassin. Point of No Return (The Assassin) (1993) at 8:15 p.m. American remake of La Femme Nikita. Maggie, A cop killer on death row, is offered the chance to avoid execution by becoming a government assassin. As a cover, she gets a new identity as a saleswoman. When she falls in love with a gentle photographer, that complicates hit jobs. (Starring Bridget Fonda)

UPDATE: This concert has been cancelled. Instead, the Miami Jazz Society is screening a free documentary film, Lady Be Good: Instrumental Women in Jazz , at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 8.

The Miami Jazz Society will present a free concert featuring the Alice Day Band on Wednesday, May 8. The concert is part of the society’s free second Tuesday concert series.

There will be a cash bar & food from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The band plays from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Alice Day is Miami’s “First Lady of jazz,” and old-timers may remember her from the days before she spent most of her time touring in Europe and Asia. You can read a story about her in the latest issue of Jazz & Blues Florida.

The concert will take place at the Miami Tower, 19th floor auditorium, 100 Southeast 2nd Street, Miami, 33131

Metromover station stop: Knight Center. If you are parking at the Miami Tower after 6 p.m. Monday-Friday, parking is $1 an hour, $5 maximum.

Students from the New World School of the Arts will be performing on Wednesday, October 10 at the Miami Tower  11th Floor Sky Lounge from 7-10 p.m. Free Admission –  Open to the public.

On Wednesday, Oct. 5, jazz violinist Federico Britos and his group will play at 9 p.m. There is no charge for admission to the performance in the Kyma Lounge at the Epic Hotel, 270 Biscayne Blvd. Way.

Two free movies will be shown as part of the Downtown Miami Film Series, on Thursday, Oct. 14.

The screenings, hosted by the Miami Jazz Society, will take place at the Miami Tower’s 19th-floor auditorium, 100 SE Second St.

A reception with free food and a cash bar will be 5 to 6 p.m.

Walk on the Water will be shown at 6 p.m. and After the Wedding will begin at 8:15 p.m.

Admission is free.

There will be free jazz at that building in downtown Miami that lights up on Friday, Sept. 24.

Miami Jazz Society is hosting two jazz bands at the Sky Lounge in the Miami Tower, as a part of its weekly Friday happy hour.

Check out the Yvonne Brown Band with Jesse Jones Jr. and Sammy Figueroa presents Sally’s Tomato – A tribute to the music of Cal Tjader during the event.

The bands begin at 7 p.m. and play until 1 a.m.

The Miami Tower is located at 100 SE 2nd Street, in Miami.
