  • Free music with a fabulous ocean backdrop at Hollywood Beach Theatre at Johnson Street on Hollywood’s Broadwalk 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. On Valentine’s Day, Andrea G performs.  Other free concerts at the theater are Friday, Feb. 11, and Saturday, Feb. 12. Also, the theater offers free music Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Palm Beach County
  • Free Valentine’s theme musical show: Love American Style, 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11, at Mizner Park Amphitheatre, 590 Plaza Real in Boca Raton, 561-393-7827. Bring a chair, or rent a chair for $2.
  • Picnic & music: Pre-order a picnic basket of treats for two from Whole Foods at Downtown at the Gardens,  11701 Lake Victoria Gardens Ave. in Palm Beach Gardens. A new express bus service, operated by Broward County Transit, will begin running every 30 minutes on weekdays during peak travel periods between downtown Miami and stops along I-95 in South Broward.

The new service begins Monday, Jan. 25, and it will be free the first week. after that, the fare is $2.35 each way, and multi-ride passes are available.

Shakespeare Miami is doing four free performances this weekend of the Shakespear comedy The Taming of the Shrew, about an ill-mannered sister, Kat, and her comical resistance to love and marriage. (This play was the basis for the popular movie 10 Things I Hate About You.)

The play will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15, Saturday, Jan. 16 and Sunday, Jan. 17, plus a matinee at 2 p.m. Sunday, at the Barnacle Historic State Park, 3485 Main Highway, in Coconut Grove.

Blankets, lawn chairs, and picnics are encouraged. The grounds will open for picnics at 6 p.m. each night.

The company will do a free story time, Tea With Mr. Shakespeare and Friends, from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Barnacle for children 2 to 10. Tiaras are optional.

The play will be performed next weekend in Hollywood.

underthesunWLRN radio’s program Under the Sun is putting on free live “sneak previews” of its upcoming show on local writers and the zany things that inspire them this week.

Hosts Dan Grech and Alicia Zuckerman will host the two celebrations of South Florida’s literary voices.

The first event is at 8 p.m. Thursday, June 18, at Books and Books , 265 Aragon Ave., Coral Gables. It will feature interviews, readings and an animation premiere. Instant poems will be available for $2 from the Poem Depot.

The second event is at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, June 21, at the The Hollywood Library, 2600 Hollywood Blvd. The event will also include readings and interviews, plus the announcment of the winners of the show’s fiction writing contest.

The third episode of Under the Sun airs at noon Saturday, June 27, and at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 28, on WLRN-91.3 FM and WKWM-91.5 FM.

To kick off the Brazilian Film Festival June 5-13, organizers are offering a free film screening in Miami Beach and in Hollywood.

The two films to be shown are My Name Ain’t Johnny (2008), a crime drama by Mauro Lima, and a short called Seven Lives.

The films screen at 7 p.m. Friday, June 5, at the Colony Theater , 1040 Lincoln Road,on Miami Beach.

They will be screened at 8:30 p.m. Friday, June 5, at the Hollywood Beach Amphitheater, Johnson Street and the Broadwalk. Gates open at 6 p.m.

Daniela Mercury will perform a free concert Saturday night on Hollywood Beach.

You can spend the weekend in Brazil without leaving Florida as Brazil on the Beach comes to Hollywood Beach Friday, March 20, through Sunday, March 22, for a free celebration of Brazilian music and sports.

Brazilian superstar Daniela Mercury, an international pop star and Grammy winner, will share the rhythms of her native Bahia in a free concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 21, on the beach east of Connecticut Street. There are a limited number of VIP tickets available for $40; click here for details.

The concert will climax an exciting weekend of world-class Footvolley competition, compliments of the Second Annual Pro Footvolley Tour Hollywood Beach Open, featuring many of the demanding sport’s greatest competitors. Footvolley combines elements of beach volleyball and soccer. This new professional tour, launched on Hollywood Beach in 2008, features the best players in the United States competing against international guests. Matches will be all three days on the beach between Polk and Buchanan.

Free music will fill several stages Friday night, Saturday and Sunday.
