Got mulch? It’s good for water conservation and feeds plants while keeping weeds down.

The City of Miami has plenty to spare and will share free mulch with anybody who will come get it, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Head to the Virginia Key mulch facility, 3851 Rickenbacker Cswy.

On Saturday, Feb. 25, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., the Miami-Dade County Cooperative Extension is holding a free open house. In addition to seminars on topics such as proper pruning, vegetable gardening made easy, and new pests in South Florida, there will be a plant diagnostic clinic and children’s activities.  Click  here for details on the event, which will be held at the John D. The Miami-Dade Cooperative Extension Division will teach you to reduce waste and save water in a free workshop Saturday, Oct. 23.

The two-part workshop will be held at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. The first part, composting, will be at 10 a.m., and water conservation will be at 11 a.m.

Participants will learn how to turn yard waste and some kitchen scraps into rich soil and to use rain barrels for irrigation and more.

Register by Oct. 21. Barrels will be available for $45. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is at 10901 Old Cutler Rd., Coral Gables.
