The Alhambra Orchestra will present “Romantic Russians,” a free classical concert conducted by Zoe Zeniodi on Sunday, April 7, at 7 p.m. at Ransom-Everglades School, 3575 Main Highway, Coconut Grove, 33133.

If you’ve got a Miami-Dade Public Library card, you can download three free, legal songs a week through a service called Freegal.

The service makes available more than 3 million songs from more than 10,000 labels in 60 countries. The exact offerings are constantly changing, but it’s safe to say there is LOTS of free, legal music to download.

You can listen to the music on any device, including iPhone, iPad, your computer, an Android or other MP3 player. The library has instructions for how to download music and how to transfer it to iTunes or other programs. Get the details here.

Free, legal music downloads is just one of the free services the Miami-Dade Public Library provides besides books. You can check out books to read on your Kindle or Nook, rent DVDs and CDs and participate in all kinds of free events.

Students from the University of Miami Jazz Band will play on Wednesday, November 14 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. The musicians include: Gary Thomas (bass); Tim Jago (guitar); Mark Small (sax); and Angelo Versace (keyboards). Miami Dade College’s Arts and Philosophy Department will continue its jazz series, Jazz at Wolfson Presents, at 5:40 p.m. Tuesday, November 6, featuring Wolfson Jazz Ensembles, directed by Dr. Michael Di Liddo. Free admission.

Three groups comprise the jazz ensembles at Wolfson Campus. The Horace Silver group takes its name from the legendary pianist and composer of the 1950s and ’60s. The Blue Note group pays tribute to the famed jazz record label of numerous classic and groundbreaking recordings. Both groups help young jazz musicians develop by presenting a wide range of jazz styles.

The program’s most mature group, the Hard Bop Jazz Ensemble, has included some of South Florida’s ?nest emerging musicians. The ensemble has performed at major jazz festivals in Switzerland, Italy and the Netherlands. The group is highly decorated, receiving DownBeat magazine awards in 2003 and 2007.

Books & Books’ founder/owner Mitchell Kaplan will host a day’s worth of festivities on Saturday, November 3 at the Coral Gables store located at 265 Aragon Avenue to celebrate your locally-run, independently-owned bookstore’s 30th anniversary in our community.

The event is free and open to everyone and includes a 30% off sale at the Gables location, all-day. Children and family activities begin at 11 a.m. and run through 3 p.m. and include live musical performances, costume character photo-ops, giveaways and snacks.

Come back later in the evening from 7-9 p.m. when they will have a street party designed to showcase the select Miami culinary authors that have toured their books through Books & Books and to celebrate their culinary talent.

Participating chefs and friends who will highlight their signature dishes at the party include: Allen Susser, Bernie Matz, Michelle Bernstein, Norman Van Aken, Douglas Rodriguez, Thomas Buckley, Abe Ng, Steve Haas and Cindy Hutson.

Café manager Irving Fields will co-host and help to coordinate the effort. DJ Max Torres will spin music from across the decades for a sampling of free food and drinks – on the house.

Miami Dade College’s Arts and Philosophy Department will continue its free series, Jazz at Wolfson Presents, at noon, Wednesday, November 7, featuring saxophonist Richie Cole.

Sax master, arranger, composer and educator Richie Cole began playing alto saxophone at age 10, winning a full scholarship from DownBeat magazine when he was in high school to attend the prestigious Berklee School of Music.

His career began in 1969 when he joined the big bands of Buddy Rich and then Lionel Hampton and Doc Severinsen. Next he formed his own quintet, touring worldwide and popularizing his own “Alto Madness.” He also toured with jazz vocalese artist Eddie Jefferson, who appeared on Cole’s Hollywood Madness.

MDC’s Jazz at Wolfson Presents features live performances that run monthly from September through April. The concerts are free and open to the public.

Enjoy free tropical and salsa music night at Tropical Park on Friday, October 19, led by Miami’s own “Siren of the Salsa” Elaine Hernandez.

All ages are invited and make it a picnic under the stars. It’s all part of the season’s free Noches Tropicales concert series presented by the Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department and sponsored by Target.

Admission and parking are free for this event. Showtime is 8 p.m.

Hernandez, a Cuban-born singer/songwriter is known for her vocals, lyrics and stage presence. She can sing a bolero, a guaguancó or timba and it will become a whole new sound, as she infuses her own unique rhythm, soul and style into each and every song she sings.

Enjoy a free a Latin jazz concert on Friday, Sept. 21, 8 p.m., at Miami-Dade County Auditorium.

Performers include Grammy award-winning and nominated artists Joan Cartwright, Nicole Yarling, Carlos Averhoff, Kiki Sanchez, Edwin Bonilla, Andy Harlow, Niki Orta, Nomar Negroni, and Daniel Berroa.

The evening will feature a tribute to late Cuban music legends Celia Cruz and Cachao, who performed with many of the artists during their career.

On Friday, August 10 head to downtown Miami for a free concert at the Olympia Theater at the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts with performances by Jahfeì and The Wailers. Food and drinks are available. The doors open at 7 p.m. Concert begins at 8 p.m.

With such classic hits like One Love, Get Up Stand Up, Buffalo Soldier, Redemption Song and Three Little Birds, The Wailers are the number one selling reggae band of all time, having sold in excess of 250 million albums and played for over 25 million people worldwide.
