History Miami, the new name for the Historical Museum of Southern Florida, will host a free screening of the film Scene of the Crime, at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 29,with commentary on television news coverage of crime in Miami by historian Dr. Paul George and Rene Ramos, director of Miami Dade College’s Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archives.

The exhibit Crime in Miami will close Aug. 29. 

The museum has a free family fun day the second Saturday of every month. You can see the schedule for future events here.

Ever watch CSI, Bones, or Law & Order and wonder how realistically they portray crime scene investigators and forensic analysts? You can hear local experts discuss the methods they use to help solve crimes and identify victims and suspects in a free panel discussion at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 20, at History Miami, the new name for the Historical Museum of Southern Florida.

The talk is tied to the ongoing exhibit Crime in Miami, which is on display through Aug. 29.

I might have to miss Bones for this.

Panelists will be :

  • Jorge Molina, forensic artist, Miami-Dade Police Department.
  • Heidi Nichols, forensic photographer, Miami-Dade medical examiner’s office.
  • Sharon Plotkin, crime scene technician, North Miami Police Department.
  • Richard Souviron, forensic dentist, Miami-Dade medical examiner’s office.
  • Samantha Steinberg, forensic artist, Miami-Dade Police Department.
  • Brian Tannebaum, criminal defense attorney and legal consultant for the CBS show CSI.

crimeinmiami The Historical Museum of Southern Florida is hosting a free panel discussion on ‘”Crime Stories of the Magic City” at 6:30 P.M. Thursday, March 18. The discussion is part of the museum’s exhibit Crime in Miami.

Four mystery writers will talk about why they set their stories in Miami and how they conduct their research. The panelists will be:

  • Les Standiford, director of the Creative Writing Program at Florida International University, editor of Miami Noir and author of the John Deal novels.
  • Edna Buchanan, Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter, author of The Corpse Had a Familiar Face and the Britt Montero series.
  • Carolina Garcia-Aguilera, author of the Lupe Solano mystery novels and a contributor to Miami Noir.
  • James Grippando, former trial lawyer and author of legal thrillers featuring criminal defender Jack Swytek.
