On Thursday, Nov. 11, at 7:15 p.m., One Bal Harbour Spa kicks off its Performance on the Green series with Manolito the Gypsy.

He’s joined by vocalist Lito and, on flamenco guitar, Manolo.  Both are former members of the Gypsy Kings.

The concert will be held in the Cabana Green area behind the resort at 10295 Collins Ave., Bal Harbour.

imageBal Harbour Shops will offer two free concerts by the Spam Allstars at 5:30 pm. and 7 p.m. on the second level of the shopping center at 9700 Collins Ave. The performances are part of the mall’s weekly Cultural Series of life music.

The music coincides with Books and Books’ “grand(er) opening” celebration for its Bal Harbor store at 7:30 p.m. That party will features champagne and noshes from Chef Bernie Matz and a reading by Angella Nazarian, author of the memoir Life As A Visitor.

bootcampBooks & Books at Bal Harbour, 9700 Collins Ave., is throwing a free party with live music, free food food and some insights into Jewish cooking from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10.

Roz Marks and Andrea Marks Carneiro will speak at 7:15 p.m., sharing all the kitchen secrets your bubbe never taught you with a discussion of their new cookbook, Jewish Cooking Book Camp: The Modern Girl’s Guide to Cooking Like a Jewish Grandmother (Globe Pequot Press, $19.95) .

Music will be by the Miami jazz band Elemnts, and Epicure will provide hors d’oeuvres and treats. A portion of sales during the event will go to Project: New Born, which benefits the neonatal intensive care unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Other Bal Harbor stores will also host special events Thursday. La Goulou will have an “all you can eat” mussels and fries special for $15, plus half off the wine list.

write1Books & Books is offering 20 percent off all poetry throughout April, National Poetry Month, at all three South Florida stores.

On Sunday, April 19, at 2 p.m., elemtary school-age kids can learn to write their own poems at a free workshop led by Denise Lanier – poet, poet, writing professor at Broward College and founder of Word Play, a poetry-in-the-schools project.

The workshop will focus on a hip-hop poem about your best friend and a nonrhyming poem about the best day of your life, real or imagined. It will be at Books and Books in Coral Gables, 265 Aragon Ave.
