Brush up on your Florida history during the Pioneer Day hosted by the Pinewood Cemetery Advisory Board and the City of Coral Gables. The event is Saturday, March 8, at 10 a.m. at Pinewood Cemetery on Erwin Road just south of Sunset Drive in Coral Gables. Light refreshments will be served.
The annual celebration of the history of early pioneer families, many buried at Pinewood Cemetery, is to commemorate the installation of new headstones for the Westberry infants buried in the cemetery in 1928 and 1931 and a marker in honor of the Munroe family.
Make sure to wear closed-toed shoes for the tour of Pinewood Cemetery, founded in 1897. It is the final resting place for more than 200 pioneers from the 1800s and early 1900s, including veterans of the Seminole Indian War, Civil War, Spanish-American War and World War I as well as victims of the 1926 hurricane.
