If you still haven’t done your taxes, it’s not too late to get free help.
If you do your own tax return and your adjusted gross income is $57,000 or less, you can file free from the IRS website, using Free File software. Anyone can file free with free fillable forms.
A number of companies, organizations and volunteers provide free tax-filing help in South Florida. Most of the free assistance is for people whose tax situation is relatively simple, but it never hurts to ask. Some programs have income limits for free assistance.
Here are places you can get free tax help in South Florida:
- AARP Tax-Aide. This program provides free help to low- and moderate-income taxpayers of any age, with special attention to people over 60. Most of the aides are in libraries or senior centers, and it’s best to make an appointment.
- The IRS’ Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program will do your return for free if you meet income guidelines, generally under $57,000 a year, according to the IRS. To locate the nearest VITA site, call 1-800-906-9887. You can find free locations in the city of Miami here. Catalyst Miami will be doing free tax preparation from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at St. Thomas University School of Law, 16401 NW 37th Avenue, Miami Gardens.
